Tourism is key to Barbados’ economy. At the BHTA, we believe that the sustainability of our tourism industry depends on our ability to convey the importance the industry to our livelihood as a nation and to showcase the vast options for career opportunities within and supporting the industry to students as well as the general public.
The Schools Tourism Education Program (STEP) seeks create awareness in primary, secondary and tertiary institutions in Barbados, through the establishment of formal relationships between tourism businesses and schools, to augment their education and exposure to the tourism industry and to forge closer community links between the industry and schools.
The pilot program was launched September 2011 with 15 schools matched to 15 tourism businesses. The pilot will continue until June 2012.
It is a program designed to assist in informing teachers about the importance of tourism through a emersion program that enables them to experience the industry as guests, and thus through them living tourism, enhancing their ability to pass on their knowledge to students.
